Take a musical trip –
Meet Your Neighbor’s Folk Music
 TM
“It was happy, friendly, warm, and the kids loved participating. We succeeded in taking the children around the world, and we didn’t have to leave home.” And so Mary Jo Ponce, then-director of the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival, nicely summed up the Hi-Dukes music and dance program which is geared towards assemblies, workshops, and residencies for schools and libraries. In other words, it is fun, engaging, and a great way to widen horizons.

It’s amazing how far you can go in 40 minutes! The Hi-Dukes take participants on an exciting interactive cultural tour ranging from Finland to Yemen and from Spain to Turkey. This energetic American / Danish group sings in eighteen languages.

Beyond highlighting the beauty of many cultures, a Hi-Duke program develops music appreciation. Traditional scales and rhythms are played on ethnic instruments, like the Bulgarian end-blown flute, Greek baglama, Irish penny whistle, Middle-eastern hand drums, and world-famous ocarina as well as on the violin, mandolin, cornet, accordion, and guitar. Preparatory workbook is available.

Share the joy of music in a cultural adventure Participants of all ages learn dances, sing simple songs, and drum along on the band’s percussion. Concert / assembly program length is generally between 30 and 45 minutes. If desired, other longer and more specialized workshops and residencies are also available.

Workshops allow for greater exploration, and can be focused on specific areas of interest. With a repertoire of about 400 melodies and 50 dances, the group can be very flexible in what it presents and is quite happy to discuss presentation options with you.

Experience what 30,000 kids have discovered Since 1990 the group has gotten feet dancing and hands clapping at school concerts and workshops in the U.S.A., Canada, and Denmark. The Evanston In-School Music Association sponsored these talented educational artists at twenty schools during November 1998. Two EISMA board members declared that the Hi-Dukes was the best group they had ever presented because the members were both good musicians and good with children, in addition to having a multi-cultural program which perfectly fit EISMA goals.
