“ ... an exceptionally interesting and enjoyable CD. For all the different origins of its songs, one attribute stands out: All of them insist that their listeners start toe-tapping, hand-clapping or finger-snapping, and finally, that they get up and dance.

From grooving Balkan Gypsy songs like “Ushti, Ushti, Baba,” “Rumelaj,” and “Djelem, Djelem,” to “Valravnen,” a meditiative Medieval Danish song about Ravens taking away the bad luck, this World Music CD has something for just about everyone to like.
Like a big, brassy sound? Check out the quintet lineup on the Klezmer tune “Der Rebbe Is Gegangen” and the Serbian dance tune “Merak Chochek.” Ever hear the Dixieland tune “Twelfth St. Rag” played on Bulgarian flute, cornet, and tuba?
You’ll want to grab your sweetie and swirl around the floor when you listen to the delightful mandolin / accordion / guitar waltz, “Lyse Nætter,” written by Jutta Distler, the band’s name sake. If you don’t have a sweetie, then dance your sorrows away to the Sephardic heat of “Ven Ermoza” and the Greek “Sala, Sala.”
Hankering after something in an odd-time signature? Then go on the ride of “Din Al Fatar.”
The group has been around quite a few blocks in the past 21 years, including multiple tours in Europe as well appearing at the largest folk festival on the North American continent, the Canadian Winnipeg Folk Fest.
The band’s instrumentation is as eclectic as their repertoire. When Jutta Distler, Terran Doehrer, and Zoi Doehrer appear as a trio, their three singing voices top off kaval (Bulgarian end-blown flute), mandolin, guitar, tupan and darabuka (hand drums), and drum set. The wide array of sounds is complemented on this CD by the accordion playing of long-time Hi-Duke Velizar Shumanov, the tuba playing of Steven Hart, and the cornet - trumpet - flugelhorn - saxophone work of Peter Bartels.
So stay “On The World Beat” with Jutta & the Hi-Dukes! It is a wonderful road to travel when you have seasoned tour guides like these!
We are absolutely thrilled that the band’s new CD is released on a great record label, Earwig Music! Known primarily as a Blues label, Earwig, has now decided to include World Music and chose the Hi-Dukes for their first World Music band! Being picked up by a label is, in itself, something to be very happy about. To be picked as a label’s first release in a new genre of music for the label is really, really awesome and we feel very much honored.
We’ve had folks tell us how grateful they were when a friend hipped them to us. Think about why you like us and figure that your friends will appreciate hearing about us because they will share many of the same motivations you have to like us.
